Kalpetta: In a remarkable story of survival, Navanya, who was two months in her mother’s womb during a devastating landslide, celebrated her first birthday on Saturday at Mundakai Township.

The disaster had struck the family’s home on Chooralmala School Road, leaving Prajitha, Navanya’s mother, buried up to her neck in mud. She was rescued and underwent multiple surgeries. Miraculously, her unborn child remained completely unharmed.

Navanya celebrated her birthday in the township’s green space with her mother, grandfather, grandmother, and relatives. She enjoyed her first cake, marking a bittersweet celebration of life and survival.

The family had lost their eight-year-old daughter, Ahanya, in the tragedy. Navanya’s father, Abhilash, works in the Gulf. The family, who who currently lives at number 6, Arapatta, were rescued and treated at a hospital after being buried in mud. They are expected to move permanently to Mundakai Township, a model rehabilitation settlement built for landslide survivors.

The township stands as a symbol of resilience and hope for families affected by the disaster.
