Munnar: Construction of New Bridge Across Muthirapuzha River Nearing Completion. Bridge connecting Pothamedu to Old Munnar is approaching its final stages of construction. Located near the Ramaswamy Aiyer Headworks Dam on the Muthirapuzha River, the bridge will link directly to Pothamedu Road, improving connectivity to the area.

Work of the bridge's main pillars and deck has been completed, with only the concreting of the decks remaining. Officials aim to finish the project within the next two months. The total cost of construction is estimated at Rs. 6.80 crore, slightly higher than the initial budget of Rs. 6 crore. The additional funds were approved following a revised estimate, with the request of Devikulam MLA A. Raja.

At present, access to Pothamedu is restricted to smaller vehicles via the privately-owned High Range Club Road or by precariously crossing the narrow Ramaswamy Aiyer Dam, which was never intended for regular traffic. This has been a long-standing concern for residents, tourists, and businesses in the area, especially during monsoons or peak tourism seasons when congestion and safety risks increase.

Once operational, the new bridge will accommodate both light and heavy vehicles, easing transport of goods and tourist traffic. Serve as a crucial bypass for vehicles travelling from Old Munnar towards Adimali and beyond, reducing congestion in the densely packed town center. Support tourism development, as Pothamedu is known for its panoramic viewpoints, tea plantations, and resorts. Improve emergency access, enabling quicker movement of ambulances, fire services, and disaster response teams in the region.
