Kalpetta: The government township being developed in Kalpetta city for survivors of the Mundakkai–Chooralmala landslide is set to complete the roof of its 200th house tomorrow. Officials from the Uralungal Labour Contract Society, responsible for the construction, said the township will surpass the milestone of 200 completed roofs by Monday. As of Saturday, the main roofing work on 190 houses had already been finished.
Roofing is carried out daily from 6 am to 10 pm, with workers braving Wayanad’s severe cold to maintain round -the -clock progress. Currently, the workforce has exceeded 1,400 and is expected to reach 2,500 in the coming days. Authorities expect the roofing of all houses to be completed before mid-January. Alongside the recently roofed house, the pillars of 79 other homes have also been erected. In houses where roofing is complete, plumbing, plastering, and flooring work are moving ahead swiftly.
Construction on the township’s 11.72-kilometre internal road network is also progressing. The main road, 12 metres wide, along with two secondary roads, each nine metres wide, have been stone-laid and are ready for the first phase of tarring. Road connections to the 35 housing clusters, which include both residences and public buildings, have been completed. Additional infrastructure work, including a 700,000-litre water storage tank, ten sewage treatment plants, underground electrical networks, and stormwater drains, is also underway. Once housing construction is finished, focus will shift to community centres, public markets, health centres, and anganwadis.
100 Houses Completed in Just 15 Days
The first 100 houses in the township had their roofs completed within just 15 days. The 100th house was roofed on December 14, despite the Christmas holiday. Rapid progress was achieved using machinery such as boom pumps, which can complete concrete work in just a few hours.
