MSC Elisa-3 Accident: Government Seeks 9,531 Crore Rupees Compensation

Kochi: In the wake of the MSC Elisa-3 sinking in the Arabian Sea, the Kerala government has filed an admiralty suit in the High Court seeking 9,531 crore rupees in compensation from MSC Shipping Company, the vessel’s owner.

The suit holds the company accountable for extensive environmental damage, including oil spills, loss of livelihood for local fishermen, and the cleanup of waste materials discharged from the ship’s containers.

Acting on the government's plea, the High Court has also ordered the arrest of MSC Arquitect II, another vessel owned by MSC Shipping. The ship, currently docked at Vizhinjam Port, has been detained in compliance with the court directive.

The case will be heard on the 10th by Justice M M Abdul Hakeem. Advocate General K Gopalakrishna Kurup and Government Pleader Parvathy Kottol appeared for the state.
