Major Rs 283.60 Crore Development Projects Inaugurated at Kottayam Medical College

Kottayam: A new project worth RS283.60 crore was launched at Kottayam Government Medical College. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the project on the 16th at 3 PM. The program will be moderated by Health Minister Veena George. The welcome address will be delivered by Minister of Cooperation and Devaswom P. Vasanthakumar, and key speakers will include Francis George and Jose K Mani.


Health Minister Veena George stated that significant development has been made at Kottayam Medical College. A development project worth Rs 1,200 crore has been implemented at the college. For the first time in Kerala, a successful liver transplantation has been performed at Kottayam Medical College. The college has become a model for the country in organ transplantation surgery. It also became the first government hospital to perform three major organ transplants—heart, lungs, and kidney simultaneously. This is the first time a lung transplant has been performed in the government sector after Delhi AIIMS. The college is also nationally recognised for heart transplantation. Along with infrastructure development, Kottayam Medical College has made remarkable progress in treatment as well, the minister added.

Projects to be inaugurated:


1) Surgical Block – Covering 33,642 sq. m, the surgical block was constructed at a cost of Rs 257 crore using KIFB funds. It includes 526 mattresses, 44 ICU mattresses, 14 modular operation theaters, a 256-slice CT scan, 3 Tesla MRI, a modern digital radiography machine, fluoroscopy.


2) Main Gate – Built at a cost of Rs 1.23 crore, the new main gate is specially designed for ICU access.


3) Cath Lab – Kottayam Medical College, which performs the highest number of angiograms and angioplasties in Kerala, has established a second cath lab at a cost of Rs 7.88 crore to serve more patients.


4) 32-Slice CT Scan – A new CT scan has been set up at a cost of Rs 4.28 crore.


5) Skin Bank – The second skin bank has been established at a cost of Rs 64.57 lakh, aimed at improving burn treatment and reducing mortality.


6) Para-Medical Hostel – Built over four floors covering 5,290 sq. m, the first phase of the hostel construction has been completed at a cost of Rs 6 crore. The building consists of five blocks, with the first floor of two blocks completed.


7) Renovated OP Block – The ground floor of the old OP block has been renovated at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore.


8) Mother and Newborn Care Unit – Set up in the Gynecology Department at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore.


9) Comprehensive Lactation Management Centre – Established to collect, scientifically process, and distribute breast milk to babies in need.


10) CRUSH Unit – Set up at a cost of Rs 60 lakh to protect 50 children using modern technologies.


11) Foundation Stone Laying of New Toilet Block (ABC Block) – Laid at a cost of Rs 74 lakh.


Other important projects:


1) Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit – Located in the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Block at a cost of Rs 44 lakh.


2) Echo Machine – Installed in the Cardiology Department at a cost of Rs 37 lakh.


3) C-arm Machine – Installed in the Urology Department at a cost of Rs 27 lakh.


4) Ventilator – Procured at a cost of Rs 83.42 lakh.
