LDF Wins Erumeli Panchayat Presidentship Despite UDF Majority and Boycott

Kottayam: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has secured victory in the election for the post of president in Erumeli Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district. Ambili Sajeevan, who was elected from the Sreenipuram ward, was chosen as the panchayat president. She is the Erumeli area secretary of the Democratic Women’s Association (Janadhipathya Mahila Association).
The president’s post is reserved for the Scheduled Caste category. However, despite having a majority in the panchayat, UDF failed to get any candidate from the reserved category elected. UDF members had boycotted the presidential election held earlier, resulting in the poll being postponed due to lack of quorum.
The rescheduled election was held on Monday, but UDF members stayed away once again. Out of the total 24 seats in the panchayat, the party-wise strength is: UDF – 14, LDF – 7, NDA – 2, and Independent – 1.
Earlier, in the vice-president election held on Friday, Saramma Abraham, the UDF candidate elected from the Kanakappalam ward, was chosen as vice-president.
