Thiruvananthapuram: Lakshmi, a 10th-standard student from NSS School, Athirampuzha, Palakkad has proven that physical challenges are no barrier to achieving success in sports. The swimmer with disabilities secured the 7th position in the 200-meter Senior Girls Butterfly Stroke at the recently concluded State Sports Meet held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Aquatic Complex in Pirappancode.

Earlier, at the district-level competition, she won the 3rd position in the 100-meter Butterfly Stroke. However, it was her entry into the 200-meter Butterfly Stroke at the state-level competition that truly showcased her growth as an athlete. Since there were no other participants in her category at the district level, Lakshmi was given direct entry into the state-level competition.

For the past year, Lakshmi has been undergoing rigorous training, dedicating one and a half hours every day to swimming practice. Her coach, Shashidharan, who runs the Hemambika Swimming Academy near Malampuzha Check Dam, has been instrumental in recognising Lakshmi’s potential and preparing her for the competitive swimming world.

Lakshmi’s mother, Pushpa, a Senior Clerk at the CJM Court in Palakkad, has been a constant source of support and encouragement. According to Pushpa, Lakshmi's swimming journey has not only enhanced her physical abilities but has also helped improve her speech and walking abilities.

"I am extremely proud of my daughter. Swimming has helped her overcome her physical limitations and has made her more confident," she said.

Lakshmi’s father, Pradeep, passed away five years ago due to a heart attack, but his memory continues to inspire Lakshmi’s determination to succeed. Together with her mother, Lakshmi now resides in Kallekulangara, Palakkad.

"I want to achieve even greater success in future competitions," she said, expressing her desire to continue rising through the ranks of competitive swimming.
