Kozhikode: The clock tower on Platform 2 of Kozhikode Railway Station collapsed at around 11.15 am on Thursday. No injuries were reported, as there were no passengers on the platform at the time, averting a major tragedy.

The clock tower, located between Platforms 2 and 3, collapsed onto a train that had been stationed at Platform 2 since Wednesday. Cracks had appeared in the structure several days earlier, prompting railway authorities to evacuate the office housed in the building and clear passengers from the area in advance.

The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall in Kozhikode district. Railway authorities had already identified that the ageing structure had developed cracks and were considering measures to address the problem. Railway employees had arrived on Thursday morning to assess the condition of the building when it suddenly collapsed. The employees managed to run to safety, preventing a major disaster.

MLA P A Mohamed Riyas visited the site to assess the situation. Describing Kozhikode Railway Station as one of the most important railway stations in Keralam, he alleged that the Railways had acted irresponsibly. He said the incident was a serious matter that had caused panic among the public and criticized the authorities for not even issuing a precautionary announcement despite being aware of the potential danger. He also called for a detailed inspection of the station and said a safety audit should be conducted at all railway stations across Keralam.
