CM Pinarayi Vijayan to Inaugurate New Surgical Block at Kottayam Medical College in January

Health Minister Veena George has announced that the newly constructed surgical block and other facilities at Kottayam Medical College will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in January. The completed projects include the surgical block, paramedical hostel, cath lab, biogas plant, renovated outpatient (OP) department, and a lactation unit. In addition to the existing seven operation theatres, seven more have been made operational. The minister said efforts are underway to complete the remaining works and make all facilities fully functional at the earliest.


A high-level meeting chaired by the Health Minister reviewed the ongoing development activities at Kottayam Medical College. Cooperation Minister VN Vasavan also attended the meeting.


The minister directed officials to ensure that all development works are completed on time. Construction of the cardiology block, built at a cost of 36 crore rupees, has been completed, while work on the infectious diseases block, estimated at 10 crore rupees, is currently in progress. Instructions were also given to initiate steps for constructing a new men’s hostel. Approval has been granted to start a postgraduate course in emergency medicine.


The minister further directed that steps be expedited to demolish the unused EFG block. To ensure uninterrupted power supply to the hospital, it was decided to convene a special meeting involving the Electricity Minister and representatives of KIIFB regarding the construction of a 110 kV substation.


The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Dr. Rajan N. Khobragade, Director of Medical Education Dr. KV Viswanathan, the Medical College Principal, and the Superintendent.
