KMRL Computer Hacked, Official Documents Allegedly Leaked

Kochi: A computer at the corporate office of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) was allegedly hacked and official documents were stolen and circulated through a WhatsApp group, prompting the Kochi City Police to register a case following a complaint.

The computer at KMRL's corporate office on the fourth floor of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro station in Kaloor was allegedly compromised. A printer used by the KMRL IT department for official purposes was also hacked. Official documents were subsequently allegedly taken from the system and circulated through a WhatsApp group. It is not yet clear which documents were leaked.

Confidential documents, employees' personal information and details of financial transactions were allegedly circulated through a WhatsApp group named “Unified Kochi Metro Rail Reform and Development Forum”. KMRL's complaint stated that the incident had compromised the company's security and the privacy of its employees.

However, KMRL has reportedly indicated that no major documents were lost. A senior police officer also reportedly said that the investigation has so far not found evidence that any strategic or sensitive documents were leaked.

The investigation is examining whether the leak resulted from a cyberattack or whether someone within the organisation accessed and leaked the documents. The police cyber team is also conducting a technical examination.

Kochi Metro MD and Ernakulam District Collector G Priyanka said the documents were allegedly photocopied and copies were also sent to another email address, from where they were leaked.

Police may examine the computer systems and other devices at the KMRL corporate office as part of the investigation. Statements may also be recorded from technical staff, including those working on a contractual basis, as well as senior officials.
