Kochi: Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is set to introduce a freight service, following the model already implemented by the Delhi Metro, KMRL officials have confirmed.
The service will operate during non -peak hours and is designed to transport non-perishable, packaged goods without affecting passenger convenience. This move aligns with the Union government’s directive to roll out freight services across metro networks nationwide.
Currently, the Kochi Metro runs between Aluva and Tripunithura, covering 27.96 km, with ongoing expansion work toward Kakkanad.
According to an official statement on Saturday, the new freight service is expected to provide significant benefits to Kochi’s business community while creating an additional revenue stream for KMRL. “It will help businesses connect more closely with the metro and offer a faster, more efficient way to transport goods,” the statement added.
Businesses interested in using the service have been asked to contact [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). Final decisions on tariffs, timings, and other conditions will be made based on feedback from participating business houses.
