New Waqf Board Formed; Muslim League Leader M C Mayin Haji Named Chairman

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has dissolved the Waqf Board led by K S Hamza before the end of its term. A new board has been constituted with Muslim League leader M C Mayin Haji as its chairman. Jamaat-e-Islami, described as an advocate of a religious state, has been given representation on the Waqf Board for the first time. Two non-Muslim members will be inducted later.
The current board does not have representation from either the AP or EK faction of Samastha. Musthafal Faizy, who was expelled from Samastha, has secured a place on the board.
The UDF government took its position on the Waqf issue by yielding to the interests of the RSS and the BJP. Earlier, the government had supported the appointment of non-Muslims to the board in response to a petition filed by a BJP leader.
