Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is steadily consolidating its position as one of the world’s safest and most attractive tourism destinations, with the state recording an all-time high in tourist arrivals. The sharp rise in both domestic and foreign visitors has reinforced Kerala’s status as a preferred global travel hub.

During the nine-month period up to September 2025, the state received a total of 1.85 crore tourists, comprising 1,80,29,553 domestic visitors and 5,67,717 foreign tourists. This represents a growth of 13.06 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. Tourism officials said the figures reflect a strong post-COVID recovery, with Kerala consistently setting new records in visitor arrivals each year since 2022.

The steady growth has been attributed to a reoriented tourism strategy that combines expanded marketing with the introduction of new and diversified tourism products. Kerala has focused on promoting its natural landscapes, backwater destinations, hill stations, beaches, wellness tourism and responsible tourism initiatives, while also strengthening infrastructure and safety standards across major tourist centres.

Officials pointed out that targeted marketing campaigns and destination branding, adapted to changing travel trends, have played a key role in attracting new visitor segments. In a bid to widen its international footprint, Kerala Tourism has implemented a Look-East policy aimed at tapping emerging markets. As part of this initiative, promotional activities and tourism cooperation have been intensified in countries across East and Southeast Asia, as well as in Australia.

Industry stakeholders said improved air connectivity, the return of international charter operations and the growing popularity of experiential and sustainable tourism offerings have also contributed to the surge in arrivals. With the peak tourist season approaching, the state expects the momentum to continue, further strengthening tourism’s role as a major driver of Kerala’s economy.
