Thiruvananthapuram: With a record number of appointments that no other state can claim, the LDF government has set a new benchmark. Since May 2016, the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) has recommended 2,89,936 appointments. By December this year, the number is expected to cross three lakhs. Due to an increase in retirements, even more employment opportunities are expected in the coming year.

The state government has directed departments to pre-report vacancies expected in the next six months and to begin recruitment procedures accordingly. Reports of expected vacancies for the next full year will also be prepared in advance.

From 2016 to 2021, the first Pinarayi Vijayan government recommended appointments for 1,61,268 candidates. The second Pinarayi Vijayan government has so far recommended 1,28,668 appointments. The increase in recruitment is due to the creation of new posts in essential sectors and the accurate reporting of existing vacancies.

During the UDF government’s tenure, many posts remained vacant due to technical and legal hurdles, which have since been resolved. The PSC has evolved to ensure that a new rank list is published immediately after the expiry of the previous one, eliminating gaps in availability of lists.

Today, 60% of all PSC appointments across India take place in Kerala. According to data from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Kerala PSC ranks first in the country in ensuring reservation compliance in government recruitment.

The strict stance of both the PSC and the state government has ensured proportional representation in the state services for all communities, economic groups, and social classes. In many other states, where temporary and contract recruitments are made through parallel processes bypassing the PSC, this level of justice and transparency is not achieved.
