Kerala Power Demand Hits Record; KSEB Issues Peak Hour Advisory

Thiruvananthapuram: According to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), daily power consumption touched 117.16 million units on April 18, while peak demand between 6 pm and 10 pm crossed 6,033 MW for the first time.

The situation escalated further on April 23, when demand briefly spiked to 6,195 MW at around 10.30 pm—well beyond anticipated levels. KSEB is working intensively to ensure uninterrupted supply by maximizing internal generation and purchasing electricity from external sources.

However, the sharp rise in demand has placed significant pressure on the transmission and distribution network. As a result, low-voltage issues have been reported in some areas. Authorities say efforts are underway to resolve these problems through network reconfiguration.

To manage the temporary crisis, KSEB has urged consumers to minimize electricity usage between 6 pm and 11 pm, the peak demand period.

High-power appliances such as Pump sets, Induction stoves, Water heaters, Irons, Washing machines, should be avoided during these hours.

Consumers are also advised to shift electric vehicle charging and air-conditioner use to non-peak hours. Maintain AC temperatures between 24°C and 26°C to save energy, switch off unnecessary lights and appliances.

KSEB emphasized that small, mindful changes in consumption can significantly reduce peak load pressure and help consumers avoid higher electricity bills. Public cooperation is crucial to maintaining the stability of the state’s power supply system during the ongoing heatwave.
