Thiruvananthapuram: Electricity consumption in Kerala continued its record-breaking run on Thursday, with total daily consumption reaching 115.263 million units as the state grapples with an intense heat wave. Peak demand surged to 5,950 MW between 10.30 pm and 11 pm, maintaining the trend of unusually high late-night electricity usage seen over the past several days.

Of Thursday's total consumption, only 27.7653 million units were generated domestically — with the Idukki hydroelectric project alone contributing 11.974 million units — while the remaining 87.4977 million units had to be procured from outside the state, underlining Kerala's growing dependence on external power sources during the summer peak.

KSEB Seeks Approval for Time-Ahead Market Purchases

To bridge the supply gap, KSEB has filed an application with the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission seeking permission to purchase 250 MW of power from the Time-Ahead Market at a maximum rate of ₹10.50 per unit. The hearing on the application has been completed and a Commission order is awaited, after which the additional power will become available.
