Minister V Sivankutty Issues Strict Order Against Vacation Classes; Warns Schools of Action

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty has directed that no special classes be conducted in schools during the summer vacation, warning of strict action against institutions that violate the rule.

As per the Kerala Education Rules, students are entitled to summer holidays from the last working day of March until May. The minister emphasized that this provision must be strictly followed by all educational institutions.

Highlighting the ongoing extreme heat conditions, the minister noted that the state government has already revised working hours for labourers to ensure safety. Forcing children to attend classes during such weather would amount to a violation of their fundamental and human rights, he said.

He also pointed out that studying in schools under severe heat could pose serious health risks to students. Citing previous directives from the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and court rulings, the minister stated that no authority has the right to disrupt children’s vacation.

The directive applies to all schools in the state, including government, aided, CBSE, and ICSE institutions.

The minister added that holding classes during holidays can negatively affect students’ physical and mental well-being. Education department officials have been instructed to monitor compliance, and strict action will be taken against any school found violating the order.
