Six Killed as Heavy Rain Triggers Widespread Damage Across Keralam; Floods, Landslides Cause Damage

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain has caused widespread damage across Keralam, with six people reported dead in various districts. Two people died and four others went missing in a flash flood in Chokkad, Malappuram. In Idukki's Kottakamboor, two siblings died after a landslide hit a shed at their agricultural field.

In Kottayam's Theekoy, a young woman died after a landslide fell onto a motorcycle, while a man was killed after a landslide hit a house in Poonjar Thekkekara. Orange alerts continue in Idukki and Kottayam. Orange alerts are also in force in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram, while yellow alerts have been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur.

Flash flood in Malappuram; two dead, four missing

Two people died after a flash flood occurred near a small waterfall at TK Nagar in Pookkottumpadam, Malappuram. Four others are missing.

The deceased have been identified as Parannaparamban Muhammad Kutty (65) from Tirur and Mangadan Anas (27) from Edarikode. Those missing are Rahim (35) from Karuvarakundu, Kuppanath Sajjadh from Vandur Kottakkunnu, Chettiyarmmal Kuruppath Rafiq (41) and Sajitha from TK Nagar.

The group had reached the area near a small waterfall when they were caught in the sudden flash flood. Six people were initially reported missing, and the bodies of two were later recovered. The search operation was partially suspended at night due to difficult rescue conditions. Vigilance continues as the water level in the river is rising rapidly.

Siblings killed after landslide hits shed in Idukki

Two people died after a landslide hit a shed at an agricultural field in Kottakamboor, Idukki, amid heavy rain. The deceased were Kottakamboor native Balakrishnan and his sister Chinnu.

The accident occurred around 3 pm. As the rain intensified, Balakrishnan, his wife and his sister had moved from the agricultural field to the shed when they became trapped in the landslide. Local residents and fire and rescue personnel carried out the rescue operation. The operation was difficult due to the steep terrain.

The bridge on the Kottakamboor-Thattampara road was also damaged. Waterlogging and crop damage were reported in several areas.

Heavy rain continues in Adimali

Heavy rain continues in the Adimali region of Idukki. Neryamangalam, Cheeyappara and Valara received heavy rainfall. The water level in the Deviyar river has risen, while low-lying areas of Patham Mile were inundated. A landslide also occurred at Pazhamballichal.

Waterlogging was reported between Cheeyappara and Sixth Mile. At Cheeyappara, a rock fell onto a vehicle, but no one was injured.

Landslides in Kottayam claim two lives

Two people died in separate landslides in Kottayam. Sangeetha Arul Lal, a native of Jawahar Nagar in Chennai, died after a landslide fell onto a motorcycle at Velathussery in Theekoy. The woman who was travelling with her was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

At Peringulam in Poonjar Thekkekara, Joseph of Chelattu house died after a landslide hit his house. His children, Jimmy and Dennis, who were inside the house, were rescued.

Two houses were also destroyed in a landslide at Mangalgiri Eriattuppara. No one was inside the houses. The eastern parts of the district received heavy rain in the evening, with Theekoy, Thalanad, Poonjar, Adivaram and Vagamon among the worst-affected areas.

The water level in the Meenachil river has risen. Traffic on the Vagamon-Eerattupetta road was disrupted but has since been partially restored. Strong water flow was also reported at waterfalls, including Marmala. A landslide at Karikkad Top on the Theekoy-Vagamon route brought soil down onto two cars, but no passengers were injured.

Heavy rain in Kozhikode

Heavy rain also lashed the coastal areas of Kozhikode. A landslide occurred on the Parappanpoyil-Punnassery road.

The landslide occurred at Katharammal, where soil had been removed for the construction of a retaining wall along the road. Heavy rain triggered a large amount of soil to slide down, while water flowing along the road is now entering the courtyard of a house below, putting the house at risk.
