Heavy Rain Warnings Issued Across Kerala for Next Five Days

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts in Kerala over the next five days.


According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast, at altitudes ranging from 1.5 km to 4.5 km above sea level. An east–west trough also lies further south, influencing the prevailing weather conditions.


Widespread rain was reported across most parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep on Sunday.


An orange alert, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rain (11 to 20 cm), has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam.


On August 4, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur will be under orange alert. On August 5, the alert extends to Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad and Malappuram. On August 6, similar warnings have been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under orange alert on August 7 as well.


A yellow alert, denoting the possibility of heavy rain (6 to 11 cm), has been issued for several other districts and for Lakshadweep on different days till Thursday.


Officials have urged the public to stay alert and follow safety instructions in view of the continuing adverse weather.
