Thiruvananthapuram: The heat is expected to persist in Keralam today despite warnings that rain activity is likely to intensify again across the state. Weather authorities have warned that isolated areas could record temperatures above normal. High humidity along with daytime heat may also increase discomfort.

Rain is forecast to intensify from Monday. A yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Palakkad districts on Monday. Heavy rain is likely in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad on Tuesday, while Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur may receive heavy rain on Wednesday.

With high temperatures recorded over the past few days, the expected rainfall is likely to provide temporary relief from the heat. However, hot and humid conditions are expected to continue in the days before the rain begins.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued precautionary guidelines as high temperatures are expected to continue today before the arrival of rain.

People have been advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight as much as possible between 11 am and 3 pm and to drink water frequently even when they are not thirsty. Alcohol, coffee, tea and carbonated drinks should be avoided during the daytime.

People should wear loose-fitting, light-coloured cotton clothes and use umbrellas or hats when going outdoors. They have also been advised to consume more fruits and vegetables and use ORS solutions and buttermilk.

Children, elderly people, pregnant women, bedridden patients and persons with disabilities should take extra precautions. Schools should ensure clean drinking water and adequate ventilation. Assemblies and programmes that expose children to prolonged sunlight should be avoided.

Construction workers, agricultural labourers and street vendors should adjust their working hours and take adequate breaks. Online food delivery workers should be provided with sufficient rest and safety measures during the afternoon.

Travellers should carry water and take regular breaks. Public events should ensure drinking water and shaded areas, while programmes should preferably be avoided between 11 am and 3 pm.

Cattle and pets should not be kept tied up in the midday heat and should be provided with adequate water. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles.

People have also been advised to remain alert to the risk of fires at markets, waste disposal centres and forest areas.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as discomfort, dizziness or severe fatigue should rest immediately and seek medical attention.
