Red Alert Along Keralam Coast Over High Waves, Swell Surge Threat

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has urged caution in Keralam’s coastal districts due to the possibility of severe sea attacks and the ‘swell surge’ phenomenon. Waves up to 1.5 metres in height and rough sea conditions are likely until 10.30 am on Monday.

People living in vulnerable low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations as directed by the authorities. A red alert issued by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) remains in effect across all coastal districts.

There is a possibility of seawater entering coastal areas, particularly low-lying regions, and of sea attacks. Beach tourism should be avoided until the red alert issued by the National Centre for Coastal Research is withdrawn.

Isolated areas are likely to experience thunderstorms and rain, along with winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, until Thursday.

Safety Guidelines

1. As rough sea conditions are likely to intensify, people should move away from vulnerable areas and relocate as directed by the authorities.

2. Small boats and fishing vessels should not be taken out to sea during this period.

D3. uring periods when the swell surge phenomenon and high waves are likely, bringing fishing vessels back to shore can be as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, both launching and bringing vessels ashore should be avoided when the waves intensify.

4. All activities centred around beaches, including tourism, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.

5. Fishing vessels, including boats and small craft, should be securely moored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between vessels can help prevent accidents caused by collisions. The safety of fishing equipment should also be ensured.

6. Travel to beaches and recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided.

7. Special caution should be exercised due to the possibility of coastal erosion.
