Kollam: Education Minister V Sivankutty has announced that the Class 10 syllabus will be reduced starting next academic year. The announcement was made during the function held to hand over a house to the family of Mithun, the Class 8 student who died after being electrocuted by an overhead power line near Thevalakkara Boys High School.

During the event, three students who had come to attend the function approached the minister and complained about the heavy academic burden. Responding to this, the minister announced the decision while addressing the gathering.

The minister said there have been widespread complaints that the Class 10 syllabus is too extensive, which led to the decision to reduce it. From next year, the syllabus will be reduced by 25 per cent. The Curriculum Committee has already approved the decision, he said, adding that there will be no major change in the core content.

The house built for Mithun’s family was handed over on Saturday. The inauguration ceremony was held at Mithun’s home in West Kallada. Education Minister V Sivankutty inaugurated the house, while Finance Minister K N Balagopal handed over the keys to Mithun’s parents.
