Kasaragod: The Higher Education Department has begun the process of setting up the district’s first government engineering college, according to Minister Dr R Bindu. The new institution will come up on the premises of the Government Technical High School at Cheruvathur. The announcement was made during a meeting attended by MLA M Rajagopalan, where it was also decided to appoint the Principal of Kannur Engineering College as the nodal officer for the project.

For years, students in Kasaragod, especially those from economically weaker backgrounds, have been demanding a government -run engineering college in the district. Responding to this long-standing need, the Higher Education Department is moving ahead with plans to start B.Tech courses featuring next -generation subjects at the Cheruvathur campus. The minister added that steps are being taken to release the funds already earmarked for the project in the state budget.

Initially, the college will offer programmes in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The nodal officer has been tasked with preparing the necessary infrastructure in time to obtain AICTE approval for these courses. Authorities believe the classes can begin soon after upgrading the existing facilities at the Technical High School. MLA M Rajagopalan also mentioned that the possibility of funding the project through the Kasaragod Development Package will be explored.
