Kannur: Street vendors who have been earning their livelihood for years at Kannur Central Market have alleged that they were forcibly evicted by police and corporation authorities without prior notice.

According to the vendors, the action was carried out with the support of the police under the administration of the UDF-led Kannur Corporation. They claim that officials removed them from the market area without issuing any advance order, notice, or warning despite their long-standing presence at the location.

The affected traders said they had invested borrowed money to purchase goods for sale and are now uncertain about what to do with the stock.

“We will have to remove everything. What else are we supposed to do now?” one of the vendors said, expressing distress over the sudden action.

The vendors also alleged that their requests for additional time to relocate their goods were ignored by the authorities during the eviction process.

Police officials, however, stated that the action was taken in accordance with a decision made by the Corporation Council meeting.

The move triggered protests from traders, who argued that the eviction had disrupted their means of livelihood and demanded reconsideration of the decision.
