Wayanad: CPI M Wayanad district secretary K Rafeeq has alleged that both the people of Palakkad and Wayanad have been deceived by the Congress leadership in connection with funds collected for rehabilitating Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster victims.
In a Facebook post, Rafiq accused Congress leaders of enabling a “known fraudster” to raise funds in the name of constructing homes for the victims. According to him, the campaign had promised to build 30 houses at a cost of 8 lakh rupees each, but while youth congress sources initially suggested that nearly 4 crore rupees were collected, former Youth Congress state president Rahul Mamkootathil later admitted only 88 lakh rupees reached the account.
Rafeeq alleged that several crores remain unaccounted for and demanded clarity from KPCC leadership on where the money went. He added that leaders from Wayanad who questioned the misappropriation were expelled from the party.
The CPI M leader also linked the controversy to the sexual harassment allegations against Rahul Mamkootathil, claiming funds raised in the name of disaster victims were diverted to fund cyber attacks on women Congress leaders who had demanded his resignation, and to finance PR campaigns to restore his public image.
According to Rafeeq, the sudden change in stance of several Congress leaders, who initially demanded Rahul Mamkootathil’s resignation as MLA but later softened their position, indicated “give-and-take deals” within the party. He suggested that revealing the full truth about the unaccounted funds would expose who benefited from the collected money.
Rafeeq charged that by shielding Rahul Mamkootathil, the Congress had effectively betrayed the people of Wayanad and Palakkad alike. He insisted the KPCC must clarify who is responsible for the promised 30 houses and give a transparent account of the crores collected in the name of disaster victims.
