IMD Issues Rain, Lightning and Strong Wind Alert for Four Kerala Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has forecast moderate rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds of up to 40 km/h in isolated locations across Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts over the next three hours. Light rain is also likely in isolated parts of other districts.
Safety advisory:
— Move immediately to a safe building at the first sign of lightning. Remaining in open areas increases the risk of being struck.
— Close all windows and doors during lightning and strong winds. Stay away from walls and avoid contact with floors and walls as much as possible.
— Disconnect electrical appliances from power supply. Avoid using landline telephones during lightning; mobile phones are safe to use.
— Do not venture onto terraces, open grounds, or rooftops — including children — when skies are overcast.
— Do not stand under trees or park vehicles beneath them during lightning.
— Stay inside vehicles during lightning and keep legs and hands inside. Avoid travelling on bicycles, motorcycles, or tractors; seek shelter in a building until the lightning passes.
— Do not go to terraces or courtyards to collect drying clothes during lightning.
— Secure objects that could be blown over by strong winds.
— Avoid bathing or collecting water from taps during lightning, as electricity from a strike can travel through pipes.
— Do not enter water bodies for fishing or swimming during lightning. Stop fishing or boating at the first sign of dark clouds and head to shore immediately. Do not stand on the deck of a boat or cast lines or nets during lightning.
— Avoid flying kites.
— Do not sit on rooftops, elevated surfaces, or tree branches during lightning.
— Do not leave pets tied in open areas during this period. Avoid going out to secure or move them when storm clouds are visible, as this may expose you to lightning risk.
