Thiruvananthapuram: The DYFI has announced statewide protests against the UDF government's decision to reintroduce power cuts in Keralam after a gap of 10 years, calling it an anti-people measure. According to a statement issued by the state secretariat, protest marches will be held to KSEB offices at district and block level on Friday, followed by demonstrations at regional centres on July 18.

The organisation said imposing power cuts even during the FIFA World Cup was a challenge to the people. It alleged that while the UDF government was keen to create even non-existent posts to appoint RSS representatives, relatives and close associates, it had failed to show the same urgency in resolving the state's electricity crisis. DYFI said it would intensify its agitation against what it described as the government's failure that was pushing Keralam into a period of darkness.

The statement further alleged that widespread load shedding became necessary for the first time in a decade because of major planning failures after the UDF government assumed office. Electricity consumption surged as temperatures rose due to deficient rainfall, while the state also had to return previously borrowed power. At the same time, electricity was not available in sufficient quantities through power exchanges. DYFI said the government had failed to anticipate these developments and make adequate preparations, resulting in the current power crisis.
