Thiruvananthapuram: Youth protests have erupted against the UDF government, which the DYFI accuses of damaging Keralam’s once-renowned health sector within four months of coming to power. Thousands participated in marches organised by the DYFI to all government medical colleges across the state. In Thiruvananthapuram, DYFI state secretary and MLA M Vijin inaugurated the march.

More than 20 cases of medical errors and negligence were reported in the state last month alone under the UDF government. Young women died during surgeries at Pariyaram Medical College and Kottayam Medical College. In Alappuzha, a lens pierced a patient’s eye during cataract surgery.

A newborn died during surgery at Punalur Taluk Hospital, while a foetus died after treatment was delayed at Peroorkada. In Adimali, a young man died after treatment was delayed due to the lack of an ambulance. In Kozhikode Medical College, a homemaker died following a hysterectomy. Her relatives have alleged medical negligence.

DYFI has decided to organise further protests in the coming days against what it describes as the UDF government’s approach of weakening public healthcare and paving the way for corporate interests.
