Ranjith brought out of Thodupuzha Police Station following his arrest
Kochi: Veteran Malayalam film director Ranjith was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days at the Kakkanad Sub Jail on Wednesday, following a sexual assault complaint filed by a young actress.
Ranjith was produced before a magistrate at his residence on Wednesday morning, following a medical examination. He had been taken into custody on Tuesday night at around 10.15 pm near Muttam, close to Thodupuzha, while travelling towards Idukki.
The actress alleged that Ranjith had behaved indecently towards her during a film shoot. She had filed her complaint with the Director General of Police and the Ernakulam Central Police. Her statement was recorded in confidence as part of the preliminary proceedings.
Following an initial inquiry, the Range Inspector General of Police directed that Ranjith be arrested. The complaint was subsequently transferred to the Idukki Superintendent of Police, under whose jurisdiction the alleged incident fell.
Ranjith's counsel told reporters that a bail application would be filed shortly.
