Ensure Safety of Malayali Students at LPU, CPI(M) State Secretariat Urges Kerala Government

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) state secretariat has urged the Kerala government to intervene to ensure the safety of Malayali students at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab, amid reports of attacks against students.

The CPI(M) said students, including Malayalis, and their parents were anxious and concerned following repeated attacks allegedly carried out by outsiders on the LPU campus in Phagwara, Punjab.

More than 1,000 Malayali students are studying at LPU, an autonomous university owned by a BJP MP. Reports had emerged that a female student staying in the hostel was sexually assaulted by an electrician employed at the institution.

Students began a strong protest after neither the police nor the management took action against those allegedly responsible. Meanwhile, criminals linked to the management began attacking students participating in the protest.

The campus was subsequently shut and students, including female students, began being evicted from the hostels, the CPI(M) said. It alleged that an atmosphere of insecurity prevailed across the campus, with many students leaving due to fear. Videos of Malayali students seeking help have also emerged on social media.

The CPI(M) state secretariat urged the Chief Minister to intervene to protect students, including Malayalis, ensure that they can continue their studies without fear and ensure that action is taken against those allegedly responsible for the attacks.
