Congress Orchestrated Assault on Kerala Health Minister Veena George; CPI(M) Condemns Attack

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) has strongly condemned the attack on Health Minister Veena George, describing the attempt as “extremely objectionable and condemnable.” The party accused the Congress of orchestrating the assault because it cannot politically challenge the LDF government. This is the first instance in Kerala’s history where a female minister has been physically attacked in such a manner.

Congress leadership sent individuals to Kannur Railway Station, where the minister was assaulted. The party views this attack as part of a broader campaign of intimidation against the Health Minister, including previous incidents at her official residence in Thiruvananthapuram, where wreath was placed and attempts to break the gate were seen as efforts to threaten her. CPI(M) clarified that these acts were not protests by any organization but were “mass attacks by assailants.”

The party has demanded that Congress explain whether the minister’s “offense” was her admirable work in making Kerala a leading state in the health sector. CPI(M) also criticized violent protests over incidents in which the minister had no direct involvement, including the episode involving scissors found inside the body of a patient and attempts to blame her for the Kottayam Medical College building collapse, which CPI(M) said was built during the tenure of Congress minister V S Shivakumar.

CPI(M) described the attack as an attempt to undermine the minister’s efforts to upgrade public hospitals to super-specialty standards and accused Congress of resorting to violence to cover up the collapse of its propaganda. The party called for democratic and peaceful protests across Kerala in response to these “sham protests.”
