Thrissur: CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan on Friday alleged that the Congress lacks the moral integrity to demand the resignation of Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil, who is accused by a woman of sexual assault and forcing her to terminate a pregnancy. He made the remarks while speaking to the media in Thrissur.

M.V. Govindan said the Congress leadership was selectively formulating its stand on the issue. “The public will understand this. People eventually choose the correct stance. The claim that the case was filed with elections in mind has no merit,” he said.

The complainant met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday with her grievance against the suspended Congress legislator. On Friday, Kerala Police confirmed that a case has been registered against Rahul Mamkoottathil. He has reportedly gone into hiding after the complaint was submitted to the Chief Minister, and police have begun efforts to locate him.

Meanwhile, the DYFI staged a protest demanding his immediate arrest. “Rahul does not have the right to continue even for a single moment as MLA,” DYFI State Secretary V. K. Sanoj stated.

Sanoj further alleged that “Rahul and Shafi Parambil MP function like an underworld network, acting as a criminal gang that will stop at nothing. Even senior Congress leaders are reluctant to speak out against them due to fear.”

“They intimidate, engage in violent acts including murder, and misuse their power — all while holding public office. Under no circumstances should Rahul be allowed to continue in Kerala’s political or public sphere,” he added.
