Ansiji Death: Probe Expands to Other Teachers After Nursing College Principal’s Arrest

Thiruvananthapuram: The investigation into the death of Ansiji (21), a student of Karungal Bethlehem Nursing College who died after jumping from a building allegedly following mental harassment, is being expanded to include other teachers following the arrest of principal Sheeja.

The Tamil Nadu Police had taken Sheeja, who went into hiding after the incident, into custody from Hosur near the Karnataka border. She was arrested on charges of abetment of suicide. Allegations have been raised against six teachers in connection with the case, and the investigation will be extended to the other teachers following Sheeja’s arrest.

Ansiji, a native of Kathippara in Neyyattinkara, was a third-year nursing student. Following her death, Karungal police registered a case against the college management and principal under charges of abetment of suicide.

The principal allegedly publicly humiliated Ansiji in front of her classmates over an accusation that she had used a mobile phone, causing her severe mental distress. Ansiji suffered multiple fractures after jumping from the building and died while undergoing treatment. Her parents had alleged that their daughter took her own life after facing mental harassment from college teachers.

A few months ago, students staying at the college hostel, including Ansiji, had staged a protest over poor-quality food. Following the protest, the students who participated were removed from the college hostel. The parents allege that after the students, who later moved to private hostels, were subjected to mental harassment by teachers and college management officials.

The police investigation into the incident is continuing.
