Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP is facing scrutiny following the suicide of Tirumala Anil, the party’s Thiruvananthapuram district general secretary and corporation councillor. Anil’s wife, Asha, directly blamed state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar for the tragedy. “You kept him close to you and pushed him to death, and no one protected him. If there had been even some support, my husband wouldn’t have committed suicide,” she told Chandrasekhar during his visit to their home.
Asha added, “He had been working in the party for years. This happened because of lack of power. We need to find out whose call Anil received last.” BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar and district president Karaman Jayan visited Anil’s house in Annoor prior to the public viewing.
In a related controversy, questions have arisen over media coverage of Chandrasekhar’s conduct. Journalism guarantees the right to report and question, yet two mainstream Kerala media outlets, a leading UDF mouthpiece and a Kozhikode- based daily, deliberately omitted the specific target of his remarks when reporting on his disrespectful behaviour.
The BJP leader’s actions drew attention when he threatened Kairali News reporter Sulekha Shashikumar. During the interaction, he reportedly told her in Malayalam, “Kairali aanel nee avide ninnal mathi. Nee chodikkanda” (If you’re from Kairali, just stand there, don’t ask questions).
