Alappuzha: In order to boost the local khadi sector, the Khadi Village Industries Board, in collaboration with the Punnapra South Panchayat, inaugurated a ready-made warping khadi loom centre near the Viyani Church Kurishadi on Friday.

Originally established in 1984 as a thread manufacturing unit, it now has a modern warping unit along with three additional looming units. These upgraded facilities are aimed at expanding production capabilities and meeting growing consumer demand for customized khadi garments, while continuing existing thread manufacturing operations.

The revamped centre was formally inaugurated by H. Salam, MLA, who highlighted the government's commitment to supporting traditional industries. "This initiative is a step towards empowering rural livelihoods and reviving the khadi movement with a modern approach," he said. Salam also announced that spinning wheels would be provided to 10 thread manufacturing units in the region as part of further development efforts.

The Punnapra South Panchayat has sanctioned Rs. 19 lakh for the restoration and upgradation of the centre. Panchayat President P.G. Cyrus presided over the inaugural function, which was attended by several key local leaders and officials.

Project details were shared by Khadi Board Secretary K.S. Ratheesh and Project Officer P.M. Laila, who emphasized the importance of integrating traditional craftsmanship with contemporary production techniques to ensure sustainability.

Panchayat Vice President Sudharma Bhuvanachandran, Standing Committee Chairperson Sulabha Shaji, and local leaders including Geeha Babu, Jean Mary Jacob, Shakkeela Nisar, and Judi were present at the event. Khadi Development Officer R. Anoop also addressed the gathering.
