Kollam: Tension has flared within the Congress camp as the Kerala Students Union (KSU) staged a protest in front of the District Congress Committee (DCC) office over the allocation of seats for the upcoming local body elections. The conflict arose after the KSU accused the DCC leadership of sidelining student leaders and favouring others while finalising the list of candidates.

KSU Kollam district president Anvar Sulfiqar, who along with 14 others had expressed interest in contesting the local body polls, criticised the DCC for ignoring the organisation’s recommendations. He alleged that the DCC allotted seats based on personal interests rather than party merit.

Expressing his frustration on Facebook, Sulfiqar wrote, “We will burst firecrackers in the ears of those pretending to sleep. KSU is not just for putting up flags and gathering crowds for programmes. Our work isn’t confined to college campuses alone.”

Out of the 14 names proposed by KSU, only one was granted a seat. In his post, Sulfiqar warned the leadership to recognise that KSU is not merely a crowd- pulling force. The student organisation has also made public, through social media, the list it had submitted to the DCC, intensifying pressure on the Congress leadership to address its grievances.
