Washington: President Donald Trump's approval rating has dropped to a record low of 32 per cent, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey also recorded a notable decline in Trump's support among independent voters and Hispanic Americans, a group that had backed him in the 2024 election.
Speaking to reporters before departing for Nebraska on Monday, Trump dismissed questions about the slide in his ratings. Asked specifically about his eroding support among Hispanic voters, he insisted he was doing well and placed blame on CNN and the broader media for the negative coverage.
The drop comes as Trump has been actively campaigning around the country in support of Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections, now roughly a month away, which will determine control of Congress. Meanwhile, there are reports that Republican lawmakers have begun putting distance between themselves and the president, particularly over his administration's immigration policies, as concerns grow about the political cost of the association heading into the vote.
The 32 per cent figure marks a steep decline from the 52 per cent approval rating with which Trump began his second term in January 2025, according to earlier polling averages. Other recent surveys have shown similar, if less dramatic, erosion in his standing, with a CBS/YouGov poll putting his approval at 39 per cent and aggregated tracking from several pollsters placing it in the mid-to-high 30s, driven in large part by disapproval of his handling of the economy, trade policy and inflation.
According to a NBC News/Telemundo poll release Sunday, 59% of Latino voters prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, double the number that supported the party two years ago. According to that poll, just 24% of Hispanic Americans approve of Trump’s performance
