Death Toll Rises to 160 in Nepal Flash Floods; Around 800 Missing

Kathmandu: The flash floods in Nepal have caused extensive destruction, with the death toll continuing to rise and several people still missing, local authorities said. The death toll from the flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River, which originates near the Tibetan border, has reached 160. Search operations for those missing have been intensified.

The Nepal Army, police and disaster response forces are carrying out rescue operations in the affected areas. People stranded by the floods are being moved to safer locations. Roads, bridges, houses and other infrastructure have been swept away by the floods. Complete disruption of traffic on several major routes is hampering rescue operations.

Authorities have issued warnings to people living in low-lying areas and along riverbanks as water levels in rivers have risen to dangerous levels. The floods have caused extensive damage across several villages in Nepal. Around 800 people are reported to be missing, including 133 Indians.

Following the flash floods in Nepal, a high alert has been issued in India's border districts. Additional National Disaster Response Force teams will be deployed in the border districts, and the administrations of these districts have been placed on high alert. Officials of the Union Home, External Affairs, Water Resources and Defence ministries are monitoring the situation.

Local administrations in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh along the India-Nepal border near the Gandak River have been directed to remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation. NDRF teams are also monitoring the situation in coordination with the state governments.

Meanwhile, India said it has sent 10 tonnes of relief material to Nepal, including temporary tents, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines. India has also sent an aircraft to Nepal carrying rescue and relief supplies.
