Iran Confirms It Struck Togo-Flagged Tanker in Strait of Hormuz

Tehran: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck a Togo-flagged oil tanker attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the vessel was trying to make an “illegal passage” through the strategic waterway.

In a statement, the Revolutionary Guards said the tanker, identified as the 'Trend', was targeted and forced to stop after a fire broke out on board.

The UK's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had earlier reported a security incident about 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. It was not immediately clear whether the incident involved the same vessel. UKMTO said there were no reported casualties or environmental impact.

Iran has maintained severe restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February. The disruption has sharply reduced commercial traffic through the strategic waterway, through which a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies normally pass.

The incident comes amid renewed uncertainty over the conflict. US President Donald Trump said he faces a major decision over whether to launch further large-scale attacks on Iran, while diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict remain stalled.
