Mumbai: N Chandrasekaran has decided to step down as chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. The move comes around six months before the end of his nearly nine-year tenure. He can currently continue in the position until February 2027, after which he has officially indicated that he will not seek another term.
Chandrasekaran’s decision to step down comes amid ongoing disputes over matters related to Tata Sons. His exit from the key position comes ahead of the Tata Sons annual general meeting scheduled for August 18.
Chandrasekaran said he was stepping down after nearly 40 years of service to the Tata Group. He described the opportunity to lead the Tata Group as a matter of pride. His current term as chairman runs until next February. The Trust had taken a favourable position on extending his tenure for another five years, but one Trust member opposed the proposal. Under these circumstances, he decided not to continue in the position.
Six months have passed since the last board meeting, but no decision has been reached on the matter, Chandrasekaran said. Tata Sons is a large company with several critical projects that need to be completed within deadlines. Having a leader to guide the company is essential for both employees and investors, he said in a public statement.
For this reason, Chandrasekaran said he had informed the Tata Sons board of directors that he should not be considered for reappointment after the completion of his current term.
Tata Sons has reportedly faced disputes over the listing of the holding company of Tata Group firms on the stock market, appointments of its board of directors and Chandrasekaran’s reappointment. Meetings to discuss these matters had also been postponed several times.
