Thiruvananthapuram : The murder of young woman in a hotel room in city reportedly was a fallout from arguments over WhatsApp status. 25-year-old Gayatri, a Kattakada native, was found murdered in hotel room at Aristo Junction, Thampanoor Sunday morning. Arrested for the crime is the victim’s lover, 30-year-old Paravur native Praveen.
Praveen was a married man with two kids and worked as driver at Josco Jewellers, where Gayatri was a receptionist. The two developed an affair and Praveen’s wife who learnt of the relationship had a showdown at the jewelry outlet. Following the incident, Gayatri left her job soon after which, Josco transferred Praveen to Tamil Nadu, a maneuver that did little stop the illicit affair.
In February of last year, the two got ‘married’ in a self-styled “thali” ceremony at a church without knowledge of the clergy. On the fateful morning of Saturday, Praveen booked a suite in Chola Hotel where Gayatri arrived by noon. According to the hotel staff, the couple were together until late night. Praveen later bolted the door from outside and left.
Early next morning, Praveen phoned the hotel reception from outside informing of Gayatri’s death. The staff opened the room and called police to the scene.
Praveen left for Kollam after the murder and surrendered himself at Paravur police station accompanied by his lawyer. Gayatri flaunted the couple’s church “wedding” photo on Facebook and posted it as her WhatsApp status. According to police, the couple fought over this during which Praveen strangulated Gayatri.
After Gayatri failed to return home, Gayatri’s lodged a missing case complaint with Kattakada police. When news arrived of her body in the hotel room, they informed the family.
Praveen will be produced before the court in Vanchoor today.
