Prathap Pothen Passes Away Aged 69

Chennai : Popular malayalam actor and filmmaker Prathap Pothen has passed away. He was found dead inside his Chennai apartment this morning. The actor was 69.

Prathap Pothen has acted in over 95 films and was an active presence in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films  from the 1980s.

Born on 13 Aug, 1952, his father Kolathinkal Pothen died when Prathap was  15. On finishing college in Madras, he began career as copywriter in a Mumbai ad agency.

Hie married actress Radhika in 1991 but the marriage lasted for just an year. He married Amala Sathyanath the next year and the couple divorced after 22 years in  2012. They have a daughter Keya.

Prathap Pothen debuted in 1978 Barathan’movie “Aaravam”. Some of his popular Malayalam movies are Thakaram, Aarohanam, Paneneer Pushpangal, Thanmathra, 22 Female Kottayam and Bangalore days. His last role came in Mammooty starrer CBI – 5: The Brain.

The body was removed to the hospital for autopsy. Incidentally, Pothen’s last FB post spoke about death. The George Carlin quote over a picture of himself at 9.38 am Thursday read “ Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a long period of time.”
