Salman Rushdie, the British writer of Indian descent and author of controversial novel “The Satanic Verses(1988), was stabbed on stage by a man at an event in New York early this morning.
According to latest inputs, Rushdie underwent surgery post the attack and currently remains on ventilator. Rushdie was about to deliver a lecture at Chautauqua Institution when a masked man dressed in black stormed on the dais and started to pound him and stabbed him. At first, onlookers thought it was stunt, but soon people rushed to Rushdie's aid and overpowered the assailant.
Police named the suspect as Hadi Matar(24) of Fairview in Neew Jersey.
The 1988 novel authored by the 75-year-old had led to death threats from different quarters, especially Iran, in the 1980s.
