Throwing covid-restrictions to the winds, violent protests have erupted across US over the killing of an unarmed African-American man , George Floyd at the hands of  police officers in Minneapolis.

In the footage, the accused white policeman, Derek Chauvin, is seen kneeling on the 46-year-old Floyd’s neck as the latter lies face down and handcuffed.  The fatal  maneuver  is believed to have caused Floyd breathlessness resulting in death   shortly after. The incident, that has sparked nationwide protests,  took place Monday evening. Three other officers too have since been  sacked.

Minnesota, where the gruesome killing took place, remains the most volatile region in the country, with curfews imposed up to Saturday evening. Protesters however defied curfew and many torched and other properties in several areas.  Police presence is rather thin on the ground, given that several from the force were attacked with rocks and sticks and hospitalised for injuries.

Governors in several counties urged protesters to return to their homes, but the pleas were largely ignored. The Pentagon has meanwhile put the military on alert for possible deployment in Minneapolis.

President Donald Trump has described the killing as “a terrible, terrible things” He spoke to the victim’s family whom he described as “terrific people”.

In the incident that took place Monday, Derek Chauvin was arrested and charged with manslaughter and third-degree murder. The bond for his bail has been set at $5,00,00. And, in a twist of things, his wife Kellie Chauvin has filed for dissolution of marriage following the incident.
