Beijing : Scientists in China claim they have developed an effective vaccine against Covid-19, the phase-1 trial results of which are put online for everyone to examine.
The Lancet, a respected medical journal in UK, published the outcome of early trials on Friday, claiming the vaccine was “safe” and “induces rapid immune response”.
108 volunteers, divided into three groups, were injected with the potential vaccine. Each group received a different dose of the vaccine.
According to the scientists, the vaccine classified as “recombinant adenovirus type-5 vectored(Ad5-nCoV)” acts as a natural infection and is especially good at guiding the immune system how to fight the virus.
In 28 days following vaccination, no serious reactions were found, an indication that humans are tolerable to the vaccine. Also, after two weeks, antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 started to surge and reached its peak on day 28 during the experiment.
Lancet concluded its paper saying the vaccine “warrants further investigation”. Incidentally, a phase-2 trial has began with 508 volunteers in Wuhan, where the coronavirus first began late last year.
