CHANDIGARH : Three-time Olympic gold medal winner and iconic hockey player, Balbir Singh Sr, died from age-related ailments early this morning. He was 95.
Balbir Sr He was hospitalised two weeks back and was in a semi-comatose state since 18 May after developing a blood clot in his brain. The end came around 6.30 am, family sources said.
Balbir Sr, was one of the country’s greatest athletes and the only Indian among 16 legends chosen by the International Olympic Committee in modern Olympic history. He was widely known for his amazing dribbling skills and tenacity to stretch out defences. Balbir Sr's record of maximum goals by an individual still remains unbroken. The icon was one of just four Indians to have won three Olympic gold medals since independence, alongside teammates Claudius, Randhir Singh Gentel and Rangantahan Francis.
