SC took suo motu cognizance of remarks made by a Karnataka High Court judge

New Delhi>The Supreme Court has sought for a report from the Registrar General of the  High Court of Karnataka, regarding social media clips that allegedly comments made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda during court proceedings.

A five-judge bench, headed by the Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and including Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, acknowledged that their attention was drawn to media reports  pertaining to certain comments which have been made by a judge of the High Court of Karnataka, Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, They have requested the learned  Attorney General of India and the Solicitor General to assist in this matter.

CJI Chandrachud further noted that the court convened as a five-judge panel to address these clips, which highlight what he described as 'gratuitous remarks' made by the judge during hearings. The CJI directed the Registrar General of High Court of Karnataka to submit a report to this court after seeking administrative directions of the Chief Justice and  lay down some guidelines on observations in the course of hearings and draw the issues now that social media is now so prominent in observing proceedings in court, commenting on that'.                                                                                                                   The bench directed, 'This exercise may be carried out in the next two days and the report may be submitted to the secretary general of this court in the meantime'.                          

The Supreme Court plans to hear the case again on September 26.Recently, videos of the judge's comments during a hearing have gone viral on social media.
