New Delhi :  Booster shot might become essential to fight the coronavirus variants, said AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria.

Immunity might wane over time and if mutant varieties were to  become rampant at such time, a 2nd generation vaccine dose would be inevitable, said Dr. Guleria. The second genre vaccines should be more efficient in combating the evolved  types. Trial of these  to-be-boosters  are currently underway. People will likely require a booster dose by end of this year. With current inoculation drive completed, steps for administering the booster could begin, said Dr. Guleria.

Meanwhile 35,342 new cases and 483 deaths were recorded across the country climbing the cases so far in the pandemic to over 3.12 crores. 4.19 people have died from the disease. There are 4.05 lakh patients under treatment currently. 39 lakh have been vaccinated countrywide as statistics on Friday evening. More than 14 crore have received vaccines in the 18 - 44 age category.
