Only Street Vendors With IDs Allowed To Operate In Kochi From 1 December: High Court

Kochi : Wayside hawkers without license or ID issued by Corporation will be prohibited on streets of Kochi from next month, ruled the High Court on Wednesday, adding that, the corporation should issue IDs to all eligible vendors and implement Street Vendors(Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act by the end of November.

Of the total 876 applicants, 700 have been issued ID cards, informed Corporation to the court in the hearing today.  927 more applications received in the 2nd phase, are under consideration of the Town Vending Committee. The Single Bench, in its ruling, stated that  hitherto non-applicant vendors should apply for IDs with the  committee and further directed corporation to decide on such applications  in one-month time.

No street vendor without valid ID or license shall be allowed to operate in the city from  1st of  December.  For  effective implementation or the order,  the court suo motu impleaded the District Collector and City Police Commissioner as additional respondents in the case.
