Of Those In Acute Poverty, 49826 Live Lonely Existence

Thiruvananthapuram : Of the extreme poverty cases found in the state, the majority are those who have become isolated or lonely at some point in their life. A list of 73,677  persons were identified as potential beneficiaries to the government scheme for eradication of extreme poverty in State. Of this, 49,826 were found to be living all by themselves. Most of these lonely individuals are orphans, abandoned or those isolated owing to failing health.

As part of first year of governance, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently announced micro-level scheme for the very poor. The scheme will render special protection and support to the beneficiaries. The current list will be finalised shortly after Grama Sabhas vetting them. 80 percent of the list has been approved by concerned  Grama Sabhas. The project will be designed to take care of food, medicine and security needs of the poor depending on the living conditions of individual beneficiaries.

Money aid too would be necessary and local self bodies will draw special plan to take care of that aspect. This is the first time ever that a State takes initiate to eradicate extreme poverty from its land completely.
